Background:

The construction industry is going through a digital revolution that is changing construction sites and in the future is predicted to look drastically different. This is not the introduction of technology for technology’s sake but to help the industry deal with some of its key challenges. For this digitalisation to take place the construction industry requires reliable, secure and high performing voice and data wireless network connectivity and for the people, plant, equipment and materials across construction sites to be effectively connected. In most workplaces these core services are seen as a basic utility available to all but not within the construction industry for work sites. 5G private mobile networks offer a real solution. The interactive panel session with 5G and construction industry experts from NOKIA, Electronic Media Services (EMS) and COMIT will outline the challenges facing the construction industry and show how utilising 5G and digital transformation can help remove or alleviate those challenges so that the industry can build faster, with fewer people and at reduced cost..

The panel will cover topics such as:

·        Why digital transformation matters in construction: labour costs, productivity, tracking, communication, site safety, meeting legislation

·        Industry challenges & how 5G can help

·        Key technology

·        Why current data and voice communication options are not fit for purpose

·        Use Cases

·        Challenges & timescales: ease of deployment

·        Bandwidth, latency and performance: the connection

Who should attend:

·        Mid-senior managers & decision makers

·        IT Managers

·        Project Managers

BAM Measures environmental and social impact to improve sustainability

Bam Nuttal has rated all its projects against 13 sustainability criteria with the results collated in a score A to G. Bam said it boosted its overall average score from D to C by making improvements on factors using data from the system.

The criteria measured are carbon intensity, construction waste intensity, environmental compliance, good practice, and social impact. Information is gathered from a range of sources and grouped into five categories: data presence; carbon performance; waste performance; compliance; and “demonstrating success”.

This is a real initiative with practical evidence of success such as the Great Yarmouth Third River Crossing in Norfolk which improved its score from C to B by engaging local schools to focus on science, technology, engineering, and maths engagement.

B&K to Redevelop Manchester City Project

A new pathology lab in Leeds at St James’ hospital will be built to support regional hospitals. Construction will commence in March and operate by Autumn 2023. It replaces the current facility in the General Infirmary in the Old Medical School which is more than 100 years old. New technology systems that mean tests can be electronically scheduled and reported will create huge efficiencies for the NHS in the region with the new lab.

The Railway Industry Association has announced 5 tests for the new structure of Britain’s railways announced last year that provide guidance on structure. The 5 questions are:

  • No hiatus in current work:More than 70% of Network Rail’s spend is with the private sector ─ and there cannot be a pause in this work.
  • Transparency:Be clear and transparent with rail suppliers, to allow them to deliver.
  • Partnership:Be an open and accessible client, and partner with the private sector for the best results.
  • Productivity:Ensure the rail industry is able to thrive ─ financial sustainability will ensure rail delivers for UK plc.
  • Ambition:Leave a positive legacy, including in safety, decarbonisation, exports and the economy.

Due to be launched in 2023, Great British Railways will replace National Rail, sell tickets, manage timetables, and manage rail infrastructure.
