The Government has announced an extension of the longer working hours allowed for Construction sites until September. Since last year sites have been allowed to work until 9pm to enable staggered work times and less crowded workspaces in an effort to alleviate the negative economic effects of COVID and protect jobs.

Luckily, technology exists so Construction sites can stay open (law permitting) and take care of their workers with beable® Wearable which has been deployed at pilot stage at a large north London site to keep workers safe and productive; it facilitates physical distancing as well as interaction tracking. Co-developed by Electronic Media Services and COMIT Projects and funded by Innovate UK, the new technology has been well received and plans to rollout to further sites in Q2 this year are underway.

A few weeks ago, we wrote about a huge TfL housing project at Acton. In news this week TfL is set to commence another huge 17 story development, this time a commercial project at Southwark station. The net-zero carbon building consumes or emits 44% less emissions using green heat pumps, solar panels, green materials, and one can only assume those buttonless lift systems where you press the floor and it tells you which car to jump in, as this system consumes energy on the way up, and gathers it on the way down. Having worked in a building fitted with this novel system, whenever the author got in a regular lift, she would spend more time than usual on the ground floor, having forgotten to press the button!
£1.9bn Lower Thames Crossing Infrastructure Projects up for Grabs
Highways England will shortlist 4 applicants (single or joint venture) to build 14.3 miles of roads, junctions and tunnels on the Kent and Essex sides of the river, on the A2. The entire project is worth up to £6.8bn and will support 22k jobs. This part of the project (Lower Thames Crossing) will build 14.3miles of new roads that with current capacity 180,000 cars / day.
