HSE (Health & Safety Executive) recorded 186 cases of COVID in Construction in the second wave. The industry has claimed £22bn across the 4 Government schemes: CBILS (Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme), BBL (Bounceback Loan) furlough grants and self-employment grants to cover lost income. 17% of Construction companies claimed Bounceback loans, the most out of any sector. The total claimed is equal to the turnover of the top 10 Construction companies and the lowest amount of insolvencies in the past decade.

beable Saves Construction from COVID

Luckily, technology exists so Construction sites can stay open and take care of their workers with beable® Wearable which has been deployed at pilot stage at a large north London site to keep workers safe and productive; it facilitates physical distancing as well as interaction tracking. Co-developed by Electronic Media Services and COMIT Projects and funded by Innovate UK, the new technology has been well received and plans to rollout to further sites in Q2 this year are underway.

Easier Immigration Rules for Construction Sector?

Susan Williams, Lords Minister, said that more roles in construction could be added to the Skilled Worked Shortage Occupation List (SOL) depending on the outcome of COVID which would allow employers to sponsor the roles on the list. The statement comes after Gleeds published a report that stated ¾ of respondents said that there was a labour shortage pf construction workers in the UK and warned that the industry could be held back. Ranging from chemical scientists to artists, the list is quite expansive already but bricklayers and masons could be added – at the moment employers must sponsor a visa for the worker but with addition to the list exemptions would apply, such as to civil and mechanical engineers for example which are already on the list.
