Shake up at world’s oldest nuclear site
When the Sellafield site in Cumbria opened in 1956 it was the first nuclear site in the world. Now, “The Sellafield nuclear site is the highest hazard nuclear facility in Europe and with the largest inventory of untreated nuclear waste in the world. Safely decommissioning the site is of strategic and national importance to the UK.” A week ago the Office for Nuclear Regulation ordered an Improvement Notice after a worker fell from scaffolding last October whilst fixing a pipe. Recently a new Infrastructure Delivery Partnership has been issued to allocate £3bn of work over the next 15 years to decommission the site. Currently Morgan Sindall and Arup have an Infrastructure Services Alliance. Three partners will be appointed; civils and general, high-voltage electrical and utilities. The PQQ starts in August with contracts awarded by November 2024. Find out more sara.l.middleton@sellafieldsites.com

Octopus Energy invests in offshore wind
Octopus Energy has invested in the Lincs windfarm which has 75 turbines over 35 square km and provides energy for 240k homes each year, the equivalent of taking 200k cars off the road with more than 350k tonnes of emissions saved every year! The UK Government has set a target of 50GW from wind by 2050 as part of its Net Zero commitment. Octopus invested a 24% stake in Simply Blue in 2021 which currently produces 9GW from offshore floating wind farms in England and Ireland. Despite controversy around turbine waste it seems wind power has not been blown away for now.
