North London Waste Authority Gets Green Light from Councillors

July #4 Update: North London Waste Investment, £65m London Fields, Construction Pingdemic, Pathways to Construction Course

North London Waste Authority Gets Green Light from Councillors

Councillors visited the site last week and approved plans for construction bidders to build the vital sustainable waste facility which will process waste for 6 million North London homes and include a state-of-the-art recycling hub. The site will have the same impact as taking 110,000 cars off the road every year and divert 700k tonnes of waste from landfill – now that’s a smart decision! Safety has been of the highest concern to the authority, and it was able to protect its’ workforce, minimise absences and resume work onsite despite COVID-19 by deploying a range of measures to protect the workforce. This means that vital works to prepare for the new recycling facilities can progress rapidly, ahead of construction next year.

New award-winning site location technology

Luckily, technology exists so Construction sites can stay open and take care of their workers with beable® Wearable which has been deployed at a large north London site to keep workers safe and productive; it facilitates physical distancing as well as interaction tracking. Co-developed by Electronic Media Services and COMIT Projects and funded by Innovate UK, the new technology has been well received and plans to rollout to further sites in Q2 this year are underway.

Construction Companies affected by ‘Pingdemic’

Morgan Sindall amongst other construction companies have been affected by the latest ‘Pingdemic’ which has seen 500,000 people sent home due to being pinged by the NHS Test & Trace app. Confusion reigns over whether being pinged means return to work with positive test or isolate with the rules different for key workers. Confusion also reigns regarding the how and why of decision making within the app: when workers check in at a venue together it seems to be a blanket ping with the Bluetooth decision making (ie workers sitting next to each other, not checked in), workers not pinged. Construction companies can avoid mass absences by deploying Bluetooth location technology beable which is only worn onsite featuring a simple survey, with proximity alerts tracked in the app.
