#2 June Update: Construction Booms, Kings X Track, Offshore Wind at Teesside, HS2 Wants SMEs

UK Construction Growth Fastest Acceleration Since 2007

UK Construction industry broke more records in May when it surpassed expectations for new orders considerably, the largest acceleration in commercial work since August 2007! Housebuilding was the highest performing category. CIPS says new orders were filled at the fastest rate in 25 years. The growth has led to other records, namely largest increase in prices of materials and subcontractors.

Untangling Kings Cross Track

The track at Kings Cross has been ‘untangled’ by Network Rail as part of a £1.2bn East Coast Upgrade to enable long term improvements for passengers travelling from London to Scotland. Apparently, all platforms are now open. Amongst other work, a tunnel that hasn’t been used for 44 years was reopened increasing capacity from 4 to 6 tracks, 20km of new overhead wires and 50 new signals were added. Hopefully an end to signalling delays at Kings Cross now then!

Offshore Wind Turbine Factory for Teesside

GE Renewable Energy chose Teesside as the site of the UK’s biggest freeport for the factory expected to open in 2023. It will produce blades for offshore wind turbines for use in Dogger Bank, the world’s largest wind factory located on North East Coast which has an installed capacity of 3.6GW and will be capable of powering up to 6 million homes.

The Teesside project plans say it could create more than 2,000 jobs.

New award-winning site location technology

Luckily, technology exists so Construction sites can stay open and take care of their workers with beable® Wearable which has been deployed at a large north London site to keep workers safe and productive; it facilitates physical distancing as well as interaction tracking. Co-developed by Electronic Media Services and COMIT Projects and funded by Innovate UK, the new technology has been well received and plans to rollout to further sites in Q2 this year are underway.
